Anatomy And Types of Degenerative Spine Disease

The Human Spine

There are 23 discs in the spine which are located in
between 24 cervicalthoracic, and lumbar
vertebrae.

There are 6 cervical discs in the neck (also called
the cervical spine) which are located in between 7 cervical
vertebrae
(C1-C7) directly below the skull.

There are 5 lumbar discs in the lower back (also called
the lumbar spine) which are located in between 5 lumbar vertebrae.

The Anatomy of the Spine

Degenerative Disc Diseases

Degenerative disc and bone diseases or trauma related injuries can apply pressure on the spinal cord (Spinal Compression) and nerve roots (Pinched Nerves), located in a tubular channel (Spinal Canal) that runs up the spine. If in the neck (cervical spine), this causes numbness, weakness, or pain in the neck, shoulders, and/or arms. If in the lower back (lumbar spine), this causes numbness, weakness, or pain in the lower back, buttocks, and/or legs.
